Intake Activity Journal

RAICES _ 2019

Graphic Design, Information Design

Advised by Priscilla Villarreal.

RAICES, an immigration law firm in Texas that often represents undocumented or asylum-seeking immigrants, has an intake form they use for children to explain their experience migrating to the US. To properly represent a client, RAICES needs to know exactly what the child experienced on their immigration journey to ensure lawyers are privy to any event that would allow the child to apply for protected legal status.

For the Journey Journal, I translated the information in the intake form into an activity book. In the activity book, I attempted to use trauma-informed information design, which allowed for clarity in descriptions (ex, sexual assault or inhuman conditions in a detention center) without forcing the child to write out every detail of the event. I used activities and abstractions as an avenue for the lawyers to collect hints about essential legal information that the child otherwise might not share or share fully. I worked on the Journey Journal and its Spanish translation with Priscilla Villarreal.
